Ten years after India's demonetisation, cash in circulation has more than doubled, reaching ₹43.16 trillion by October 2026. This increase occurred despite the significant growth of digital payments, particularly the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The currency-to-GDP ratio has also returned to pre-demonetisation levels, around 12 percent. While UPI transactions have surged dramatically, the continued reliance on physical currency highlights its enduring importance for households, businesses, and the informal economy.
