Chennai Researchers Discover Two New Marine Fish Species

Times of India · science

Researchers from the Zoological Survey of India's Marine Biology Regional Centre in Chennai have identified two new species of marine fish: a sandperch and an electric ray. The sandperch, a bottom-dwelling predator, was found incidentally in the Bay of Bengal, while the electric ray was discovered in deep waters off the Arabian Sea. These discoveries highlight that the diversity of demersal fish along India's eastern continental shelf remains largely unexplored. This finding suggests that further surveys are likely to reveal more undescribed fish species in Indian waters.
