Reduce Demurrage on Detained Import Consignments Using Bonded Warehouses
Business Standard · business
Importers facing customs disputes can avoid demurrage charges on detained air cargo by shifting goods to a bonded warehouse under Section 49 of the Customs Act, 1962. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) manual allows this, though importers must pay accrued demurrage and bear warehouse charges. For goods no longer desired, re-export is possible by filing a bill of transhipment under Section 54 of the Customs Act, requiring the shipping line to amend the Import General Manifest.
