The Supreme Court has directed Indian Railways to implement travel insurance for passengers purchasing tickets from station counters. Currently, this facility is only available for online bookings. The court questioned the disparity, noting that many counter ticket buyers, often from less privileged backgrounds, could benefit significantly from insurance coverage. Railways has been given a deadline of to take concrete steps towards this implementation. The apex court also expressed dissatisfaction with railway safety measures and the underutilization of allocated budgets for security-related projects.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने भारतीय रेलवे को स्टेशन काउंटर से टिकट खरीदने वाले यात्रियों के लिए यात्रा बीमा लागू करने का निर्देश दिया है। फिलहाल यह सुविधा केवल ऑनलाइन बुकिंग के लिए उपलब्ध है। कोर्ट ने इस अंतर पर सवाल उठाया, यह देखते हुए कि काउंटर से टिकट खरीदने वाले कई यात्री, जो अक्सर कम विशेषाधिकार प्राप्त पृष्ठभूमि से होते हैं, बीमा कवरेज से काफी लाभान्वित हो सकते हैं। रेलवे को इस कार्यान्वयन की दिशा में ठोस कदम उठाने के लिए एक समय सीमा दी गई है। शीर्ष अदालत ने रेलवे सुरक्षा उपायों और सुरक्षा-संबंधी परियोजनाओं के लिए आवंटित बजट के कम उपयोग पर भी असंतोष व्यक्त किया है।
