Galapagos Birds Introduced for Ticks Now Outnumber Native Wildlife

Times of India · environment

The smooth-billed ani, a bird introduced to the Galapagos Islands in the 1960s to control cattle ticks, has since spread across most major islands. Initially brought to aid farmers facing losses, the birds' population surged dramatically after the 1982-83 El Niño event. Researchers estimate the population has reached 250,000, raising significant concerns for the survival of native wildlife. This ecological imbalance highlights the unintended consequences of introducing non-native species, even for seemingly practical agricultural solutions.
