Activists Warn Against Odisha Bauxite Mining Revival

Environmental activists have cautioned against renewed attempts to revive bauxite mining in Odisha's Niyamgiri hills. The National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM) stated that Vedanta Group chairman Anil Agarwal's recent comments about reopening the mines for local jobs are concerning. Prafulla Samantara highlighted that the hills are sacred to the Dongria Kondh tribal group and that their gram sabhas had previously rejected the mining project. Activists allege that arrests of movement leaders are an attempt to weaken opposition to corporate control over the region.
