India's Two-Child Policy Laws 'Lost Relevance', Says Supreme Court

Times of India · politics

The Supreme Court has observed that laws penalising citizens for having more than two children have lost their relevance due to significant demographic changes. A bench noted that the fear of overpopulation has crumbled, with India's total fertility rate falling below the replacement level. The court warned that ignoring these changes could lead to serious consequences, including an ageing population and a decline in the working-age demographic. Such policies also infringe upon reproductive autonomy and exclude citizens from political representation.
