Bombay's Working-Class Libraries Flourished During Specific Historical Years

A new book explores the vibrant library culture that emerged in Bombay during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This era saw the establishment of numerous libraries organised by religious communities, neighbourhoods, and secular institutions. While community libraries like the Mulla Firoz Library and Parsis' Jamestji Nasarwanji Petit Fore Reading Room served specific groups, working-class individuals were largely absent from these. They instead frequented smaller, more transient libraries located in chawls, with some reading devotional books or borrowing from circulating collections.
