Following World War II, Indian residents in Japan encountered significant economic challenges under the Allied occupation. Trade restrictions and disrupted livelihoods made adaptation difficult for the 164 Indians tracked by the Indian Liaison Mission. Initially, economic conditions were "not satisfactory," with many struggling to find work or conduct their businesses. A temporary reprieve came with the Open General Licence system in 1947, allowing Indian traders to visit and conduct business, which helped many regain financial stability. The establishment of an Overseas Supply Store also presented new opportunities for profit.
