RBI panel suggests higher WMA limit for states

An RBI advisory committee has recommended increasing the aggregate Ways and Means Advances (WMA) limit for state governments by 11.2 per cent to ₹67,839 crore. This facility helps states manage temporary cash flow mismatches. The committee also urged states to borrow more evenly throughout the year, rather than concentrating issuances at the financial year's end. This concentration can pressure borrowing costs and lead to high cash balances. Additionally, the panel suggested reducing overdraft periods and increasing access to funds held in the Consolidated Sinking Fund.
