El Niño Brings Butcher Bird 'Kasai Pitta' Out in Rayalaseema Scrub Lands
The Hindu · india
The butcher bird, known locally as 'kasai pitta', is being sighted more frequently in the arid scrublands of Rayalaseema. This phenomenon is linked to the El Niño year, which thins the green cover, making prey easier to spot. Despite its 'Least Concern' status globally, the bird faces local threats from habitat loss due to housing development and pesticide use. Intensive farming practices are reducing its insect prey, and the El Niño event has drastically reduced breeding of its food sources.
