Ground Beetle Numbers Surge 40-Fold On Antipodes Island Post-Mice Eradication
Times of India - India · india
Invasive house mice were eradicated from New Zealand's remote Antipodes Island in 2018 after over a century of presence. Eight years later, scientists report a dramatic ecological recovery. Ground beetle numbers have surged approximately 40 times higher than pre-eradication levels, while rove beetles have increased more than twentyfold. This significant increase in invertebrate populations, published in Conservation Science and Practice, highlights the powerful, albeit sometimes delayed, impact of removing a persistent predator from a fragile island ecosystem. The findings offer a rare long-term measure of such ecological restoration.
