Karnataka Cotton Crop Hit By Dry Spell And Brown Disease, Farmers Face Losses
The Hindu · india
A prolonged dry spell and moisture deficit have severely impacted cotton yields in Karnataka's Yadgir district this kharif season. Despite exceeding sowing targets, farmers are now facing significant financial losses due to reduced production and crop damage. Rainfall deficit between June and September was 34%, attracting brown disease and pests. Yield projections are grim, with rain-fed areas expecting only 2-3 quintals per acre and irrigated lands 5-7 quintals. Farmers invested around ₹30,000 per acre, and current market prices may not even cover input costs, leading to insurmountable losses.
