Odisha Rescuer Transforms Snakebite Response, Reducing Deaths Significantly

Snakebite deaths in Odisha's Angul district have dramatically decreased from over 100 to double digits, thanks to the efforts of former journalist Biplab Mahapatra. Inspired by a python rescue in 2011, Mahapatra founded People for Animals, Angul, to address human-wildlife conflict, particularly concerning snakes. He now trains volunteers and educates communities on safe snake handling, shifting the focus from killing to rescue and rehabilitation. His organization, formally registered in 2013, works to protect various wildlife and mitigate conflicts.
