A recent two-day survey in Kerala's Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary has recorded a total of 65 vultures. The count includes 54 white-rumped vultures and 11 red-headed vultures, both species facing significant threats. The survey, a collaborative effort by the Kerala Forest department, WWF-India, and the Hume Centre, involved 42 participants across nine teams. This finding highlights Wayanad's importance as a vital habitat for these scavengers within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Continued monitoring is crucial for their conservation and to address threats like poisoning and electrocution.
