Local Wisdom Reveals Insights into Endangered Dholes in Western Ghats

Times of India · environment

Two studies in India's Western Ghats explored how local ecological knowledge aids understanding of the endangered Asiatic wild dog, or dhole. Researchers interviewed hundreds of local residents, plantation workers, and forest personnel in Wayanad and Valparai. Findings indicate that local communities can provide valuable data on dhole movements, pack sizes, and behaviour, complementing scientific monitoring. This knowledge also highlights the cultural significance of dholes, including their role in folklore and spiritual traditions, offering a unique perspective on coexistence.
