UPI Payments Remain Free For Consumers

Recent claims about MDR and GST increasing UPI payment costs have been clarified, assuring that common consumers and small businesses will not face any additional financial burden. According to NPCI, the MDR is a service fee paid by merchants to banks for digital payments, not by customers. MDR will remain zero for UPI merchant transactions up to ₹2,000, meaning approximately 96% of merchant transactions in India will be exempt from this charge. This ensures UPI payments continue to be a cost-effective digital transaction method for the majority.
