US special envoy Steve Witkoff faced criticism for calling Russian President Vladimir Putin a "humanitarian" during a meeting to secure the release of American citizen Stephen Hubbard. Witkoff thanked Putin, stating, "You are a humanitarian also, sir." The comments drew sharp rebuke from Republican Senator Thom Tillis, who questioned Witkoff's definition of the term. President Trump downplayed the remarks, calling them specific to the hostage release, while Vice President JD Vance defended Witkoff's diplomatic role in achieving the objective.
