UK-Mauritius Chagos Sovereignty Deal Stalls Amid US Opposition and UK Delays

A treaty signed in May 2025 between the UK and Mauritius concerning the Chagos archipelago has stalled, preventing the return of displaced Chagossians. The agreement allows Mauritius sovereignty over the islands, excluding Diego Garcia which remains a US military base. Opposition from US President Donald Trump and legislative delays in the UK Parliament have halted the treaty's entry into force. Activists express fears that elderly Chagossians may never see their homeland again due to these setbacks. International legal opinions have previously favoured the archipelago's return to Mauritius.
