Supreme Court Petition Challenges New UPI Merchant Fees

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the Centre's new framework for Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on high-value UPI transactions. The advocate argues that the additional cost could be passed on to consumers, defeating the purpose of free UPI for ordinary users. The new rules, effective October 15, impose a 0.4% charge on specified person-to-merchant UPI payments above ₹2,000. Person-to-person transactions and payments up to ₹2,000 remain free.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट में एक याचिका दायर की गई है। यह याचिका केंद्र सरकार के नए मर्चेंट डिस्काउंट रेट (MDR) फ्रेमवर्क को चुनौती देती है, जो ज़्यादा मूल्य वाले UPI ट्रांज़ैक्शन पर लागू होगा। वकील का कहना है कि इस अतिरिक्त लागत का बोझ ग्राहकों पर पड़ सकता है, जिससे आम लोगों के लिए फ्री UPI का मकसद ही खत्म हो जाएगा। नए नियम 15 अक्टूबर से लागू होंगे, जिसमें ₹2,000 से ज़्यादा के मर्चेंट UPI पेमेंट पर 0.4% चार्ज लगेगा।
