Director Kamal has revealed why Mammootty was the ideal choice for the lead role in his 1996 film 'Azhakiya Ravanan'. He explained that while the producer initially suggested Mohanlal, Mammootty brought a unique freshness to the character of Shankar Das. Kamal felt Mammootty's portrayal captured the nuances of a wealthy but troubled millionaire, a performance he believed would feel less novel with Mohanlal. The director also addressed the public perception of Mammootty at the time, contrasting it with the actor's genuine personality.
