Supreme Court Laments Bar Associations Foiled Plan To Re-engage Retired Judges

The Supreme Court expressed disappointment that its 2021 judgment to re-engage retired judges as ad hoc high court judges to speed up case disposal has not been implemented. Bar associations have reportedly resisted these appointments, leading to the plan remaining on paper. Retired judges are often reluctant to take up these roles due to lucrative practices in arbitration or opinion writing. The apex court had activated Article 224A of the Constitution to address the pendency of over 65 lakh cases in high courts.
