A recent court sentencing of a couple to death for murder has raised questions about capital punishment for women in India. The first woman to be executed after India's independence was Ratanbai Jain, who was hanged in Delhi's Tihar Jail. Jain, then 35, was convicted of poisoning three young women she suspected of having an affair with her husband. Her death sentence was upheld by the Delhi Sessions Court and Punjab High Court. Official records indicate she remains the only woman executed since independence.
