Elephants Grow New Teeth Like A Conveyor Belt
Times of India · science
Elephants possess a unique dental system, developing four to six sets of chewing teeth throughout their lives to manage constant consumption of tough plant material. Unlike humans, their molars form at the back of the jaw and move forward, replacing worn-out teeth. This 'conveyor belt' process means old teeth often break into pieces as new ones emerge. While this system ensures a continuous chewing surface, the final set eventually wears down, impacting an elephant's ability to eat and maintain nutrition in old age.
