Supreme Court Allows Bengal Electoral Roll Discrepancy Checks As Interim Measure

The Supreme Court has verbally stated that the use of "logical discrepancy" checks during electoral roll revisions in West Bengal is permitted as an interim arrangement. The court clarified that its previous judgment on a similar exercise in Bihar does not set a binding precedent for the current situation. The Election Commission has been issuing notices to voters regarding discrepancies like mismatches in parent names or age gaps. The legality of these checks is yet to be definitively decided by the apex court.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने मौखिक रूप से कहा है कि पश्चिम बंगाल में चुनावी सूची के संशोधन के दौरान "तार्किक विसंगति" जांच का उपयोग एक अंतरिम व्यवस्था के तौर पर करने की अनुमति है। कोर्ट ने स्पष्ट किया कि बिहार में इसी तरह के अभ्यास पर उसका पिछला फैसला वर्तमान स्थिति के लिए बाध्यकारी मिसाल कायम नहीं करता है। चुनाव आयोग मतदाताओं को माता-पिता के नाम में बेमेल या उम्र के अंतर जैसी विसंगतियों के संबंध में नोटिस जारी कर रहा है। इन जांचों की वैधता अभी शीर्ष अदालत द्वारा निश्चित रूप से तय की जानी बाकी है।
