Business Standard · business

Coal gasification projects have the potential to save India approximately ₹1.5 trillion in foreign exchange over the next five to seven years by substituting imports, according to Coal Ministry Secretary Vikram Dev Dutt. The Centre has committed ₹46,000 crore in financial incentives under two schemes to promote these projects. Coal gasification converts coal into syngas, enabling the domestic manufacture of products like methanol and ethanol, currently imported in substantial quantities. This initiative is expected to drive industrial diversification, regional development, and generate employment opportunities in downstream industries.
