California's Invasive Ice Plant Threatens Native Ecosystems Despite Early Use

Hindustan Times · environment

Introduced to California in the early 1900s for erosion control, the South African ice plant has become a significant invasive species. This succulent can grow over three feet wide annually, forming dense mats that kill native plants and alter soil composition. It aggressively invades dune habitats, outcompeting endangered and rare species. Removal efforts are challenging due to its rapid seed dispersal, and authorities now recommend native alternatives for erosion control.
