Supreme Court questions efficacy of alcohol bans
Business Standard · india
The Supreme Court has questioned the effectiveness of alcohol bans, highlighting their negative impact on public safety and state revenue. The court's remarks came during a verdict on restrictions for industrial methanol sales, imposed by the Maharashtra government after a 1991 spurious liquor tragedy. Justices J B Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran noted that prohibition fails to end alcoholism. They identified five major 'evils' of prohibition: revenue loss, enforcement costs, police corruption, illegal distilling, and increased secondary substance abuse.
