RBI Study Uses Household Surveys To Fill State Inflation Data Gaps
Business Standard · business
Reserve Bank of India researchers have estimated state-wise urban inflation for four months during the Covid-19 pandemic when official data was unavailable. They used household inflation perceptions, expectations, and past data, refining estimates with historical forecast errors. The reconstructed data closely tracked official all-India urban CPI inflation, with differences ranging from 14 to 22 basis points. This study highlights the potential of household surveys as an alternative information source when conventional price collection is disrupted, aiding regional price analysis and inflation-targeting framework studies.
