As the Ganga water-sharing treaty between India and Bangladesh approaches its renewal this year, Bihar is pushing to resolve its demand for a fixed share of river water during the lean season. The 1996 treaty dictates water distribution based on flow rates at the Farakka barrage, with specific allocations for both nations when water levels are low. Experts, however, question Bihar's claims of the treaty burdening the state, suggesting siltation from the Farakka barrage is the primary issue.
