The Calcutta High Court has ordered the immediate release and repatriation of a Bangladeshi woman convicted under the Foreigners Act. Justice Jay Sengupta reduced her three-year sentence to the 1.5 years she has already served, stating no purpose would be served by keeping her in custody longer. The woman, Tanushree Sarkar, was initially sentenced by a Bongaon court in September 2025. Her counsel argued she was a minor at the time of arrest, a fact not presented during the trial.
