Indian Army Restores Thar Desert Ponds To Aid Wildlife Amid Water Scarcity
Times of India · environment
The Indian Army's Konark Corps has revived two neglected ponds in Rajasthan's Thar Desert to combat severe water scarcity affecting wildlife. Temperatures nearing 50 degrees Celsius had dried up natural water sources, prompting the initiative. The ponds were cleaned, deepened, and repaired to increase water-holding capacity, aiming to collect rainwater and recharge groundwater. This restoration is expected to provide vital water for animals like chinkaras and nilgai within their natural habitats, reducing human-wildlife conflict. Environmentalists have praised the effort, emphasizing continued collaboration for the desert's fragile ecosystem.
