SC: Illegal Cattle Transport Alone Doesn't Prove Slaughter Intent

Times of India · india

The Supreme Court has ruled that police cannot automatically invoke stringent anti-cattle slaughter laws for mere illegal transportation of bovine animals. The court acquitted a man convicted for illegally transporting 32 bulls, stating the prosecution failed to prove the intention was for slaughter. The bench noted that the absence of transport documents does not inherently imply an intent for slaughter. Furthermore, veterinary and Gaushala Committee reports indicated the seized cattle were fit for agricultural use, supporting the acquittal.
