The Madras High Court has granted anticipatory bail to Chennai Press Club president M. Suresh Vedhanayagam and two other journalists, D. Prakash and S. Sarath Kumar. They were booked by Vepery police for allegedly portraying a fellow journalist as an extortionist in WhatsApp groups. Justice N. Ramesh stipulated that the three must appear before the investigating officer daily until further orders. The judge noted that while journalism is about informing the public, settling scores via accusations in WhatsApp groups does not fall under press freedom.
