The Kerala government is exploring the establishment of desalination plants along its coast to address drinking water shortages in vulnerable coastal villages. A 13-member expert committee has been formed by the Water Resources department to assess the technical and financial feasibility of such projects. This move follows discussions and proposals from previous administrations, including a specific plan for a 10 million litres per day plant in Vypeen estimated at ₹215 crore. The committee's recommendations will guide the government's decision on commissioning desalination plants.

केरल सरकार तटीय गांवों में पीने के पानी की कमी को दूर करने के लिए अपने तटों पर खारे पानी को मीठा बनाने वाले प्लांट लगाने की संभावना तलाश रही है। जल संसाधन विभाग ने ऐसे प्रोजेक्ट की तकनीकी और वित्तीय व्यवहार्यता का आकलन करने के लिए 13-सदस्यीय विशेषज्ञ समिति का गठन किया है। यह कदम पिछली प्रशासनों की चर्चाओं और प्रस्तावों के बाद उठाया गया है, जिसमें ₹215 करोड़ की अनुमानित लागत से वायपीन में 10 मिलियन लीटर प्रति दिन के प्लांट के लिए एक विशेष योजना भी शामिल है। समिति की सिफारिशें खारे पानी को मीठा बनाने वाले प्लांट शुरू करने के बारे में सरकार के फैसले का मार्गदर्शन करेंगी।
