10,500-Year-Old Worked Wood Found Beneath German Lake Arendsee
Times of India · science
Archaeologists have recovered exceptionally well-preserved worked wood dating back 10,500 years from beneath Germany's Lake Arendsee. The finds, made at a depth of 20 metres, include a 1.6-metre post and 1.3-metre boards bearing felling marks. These discoveries may offer new evidence of wooden structures built by Mesolithic hunter-gatherers. The lake's unique geological conditions have preserved these ancient organic materials, which rarely survive from this period. Researchers are investigating whether the wood belonged to huts or other previously unknown structures, potentially shedding new light on Mesolithic life.
