India to Block Under-18s From Social Media

The Indian government will soon amend Information Technology Intermediary Rules to prevent social media platforms from allowing users under 18 to create accounts. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Supreme Court that such agreements with minors are void and will become a statutory obligation for intermediaries. This move aims to protect children from risks like online grooming, exploitation, and cyberbullying. The court had previously questioned why platforms imported US restrictions into India and urged the government to ensure compliance with Indian laws.

भारत सरकार जल्द ही Information Technology Intermediary Rules में बदलाव करेगी ताकि सोशल मीडिया प्लेटफॉर्म 18 साल से कम उम्र के यूजर्स को अकाउंट बनाने से रोक सकें। Solicitor General Tushar Mehta ने Supreme Court को बताया कि नाबालिगों के साथ ऐसे समझौते अमान्य होते हैं और यह मध्यस्थों के लिए एक वैधानिक दायित्व बन जाएगा। इस कदम का मकसद बच्चों को ऑनलाइन ग्रूमिंग, शोषण और साइबरबुलिंग जैसे जोखिमों से बचाना है। कोर्ट ने पहले सवाल उठाया था कि प्लेटफॉर्म भारत में अमेरिकी प्रतिबंध क्यों लागू कर रहे हैं और सरकार से भारतीय कानूनों का पालन सुनिश्चित करने को कहा था।
