A recent survey on Seychelles' Aldabra Atoll reveals a thriving population of approximately 1.83 lakh giant tortoises, significantly exceeding the total human population of Seychelles, which stands at 1.35 lakh. This represents the world's largest population of giant tortoises living in a natural environment. Once critically endangered with fewer than 1,000 individuals in the 19th century due to hunting, extensive conservation efforts have led to their remarkable recovery. The study, conducted by scientists from Seychelles Islands Foundation and the University of Exeter, utilized data from 2018 to 2022.
