Yair Golan, leader of Israel's Democratic Party, has stated that the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was a mistake. He believes the act did not serve the interests of the State of Israel, despite Khamenei's alleged unworthiness to live. Golan also deemed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's goal of toppling the Iranian government unrealistic. Khamenei was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike on February 28, the war's opening day, ending his decades-long rule. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has since succeeded him.
