UPI MDR Rollout May Be Deferred To January 2027 Amid Retailer Pushback

The introduction of a merchant discount rate (MDR) on select UPI transactions, initially planned for October 15, may be postponed to January 1, 2027. This potential deferment comes in response to significant pushback from retail traders' associations concerned about increased payment costs. A proposal to delay the rollout is currently under consideration by the UPI and Services Steering Committee, headed by the NPCI. The committee is also exploring exempting businesses with an annual turnover of up to ₹40 Lakh from the MDR charges.

चुनिंदा UPI ट्रांज़ैक्शन पर मर्चेंट डिस्काउंट रेट (MDR) का लागू होना, जो पहले 15 अक्टूबर से होना था, 1 जनवरी 2027 तक टल सकता है। यह संभावित देरी खुदरा व्यापारियों के संगठनों की ओर से भारी विरोध के कारण हो रही है, जिन्हें भुगतान की लागत बढ़ने की चिंता है। इस देरी के प्रस्ताव पर UPI और सर्विसेज स्टीयरिंग कमेटी, जिसकी अध्यक्षता NPCI कर रही है, विचार कर रही है। कमेटी 40 लाख रुपये तक के सालाना टर्नओवर वाले व्यवसायों को MDR शुल्क से छूट देने पर भी विचार कर रही है।
