Giant 'D-rex' Fungus Discovered in China, Dates Back 65 Million Years

Times of India · science

Chinese scientists have discovered a massive new fungus species, officially named Dianjunus rex, nicknamed 'D-rex,' in Yunnan Province. This giant fungus can reach up to 50 centimeters in height and weigh 2.2 kilograms, making it the largest known in the Ascomycota group. Molecular clock analysis suggests its lineage originated approximately 65 million years ago, shortly after the extinction of the dinosaurs. Researchers believe the ecological void left by the extinction allowed this wood-decomposing fungus to emerge and evolve.
