Freedom West Homes, a housing cooperative established to help Black and immigrant families remain in San Francisco after urban renewal displacement, is nearing a major redevelopment. The project has secured a $23 million city subsidy, alongside private financing, for its long-planned transformation into a residential district with nearly 2,400 homes. This initiative aims to replace ageing buildings while ensuring longtime cooperative shareholders retain their ownership stakes. The redevelopment, known as Freedom West 2.0, will cover a 10-acre site and include 17% income-restricted housing, preserving community ownership.
