Biosphere 2 Oxygen Fell Dangerously Low

Eight individuals entered Arizona's Biosphere 2 in September 1991, sealing themselves off from the outside world. Within 16 months, the oxygen level inside the 3.15-acre facility dropped from 21% to a dangerous 14%. Researchers investigated the cause, initially suspecting soil respiration. However, carbon dioxide levels did not increase proportionally, suggesting another factor. The study eventually pointed to the concrete building itself absorbing significant amounts of carbon dioxide through a process called carbonation, explaining the drastic oxygen depletion.
