CCTV Footage Access Faces Hurdles Under RTI

Accessing crucial CCTV footage as evidence is challenging, as recordings are often overwritten before citizens can obtain them. While courts can order footage preservation, obtaining it via RTI is restricted if it falls under exemptions like endangering safety or privacy. The Allahabad High Court ruled footage cannot be simply handed over through RTI if exemptions apply. However, courts and competent authorities can still summon it.

सी.सी.टी.वी. फुटेज सबूत के तौर पर मिलना मुश्किल है, क्योंकि अक्सर यह ओवरराइट हो जाता है। कोर्ट फुटेज को सुरक्षित रखने का आदेश दे सकती है, लेकिन आर.टी.आई. से इसे पाना तब मना है जब सुरक्षा या निजता का मामला हो। इलाहाबाद हाईकोर्ट ने कहा कि आर.टी.आई. के तहत फुटेज ऐसे मामलों में सीधे नहीं दिया जा सकता। हालांकि, कोर्ट और अन्य अधिकारी इसे मंगवा सकते हैं।
