Devotees Banned From Climbing Arunachala Hills On Maha Deepam Day

The Hindu · india

For the third consecutive year, devotees will be prohibited from climbing Arunachala Hills in Tiruvannamalai on Maha Deepam, November 24. District Collector Vandhana Garg cited heavy rain forecasts and the need to ensure public safety as reasons for the ban. This decision follows a 2024 landslip that tragically claimed seven lives. While devotees are restricted, a select group of local fishermen will be permitted to ascend the hills to perform the traditional lighting ritual. Officials are also evicting approximately 1,400 families residing on the hills for their safety.
