India Shifts Ethanol Sourcing Away From Sugar For Petrol Blending Programme

Times of India - Business · business

India's government is altering its ethanol procurement for petrol blending, excluding sugar-based raw materials like sugarcane juice and molasses for the 2026-27 period. State-run oil companies will now source ethanol from maize, broken rice, and surplus rice instead. This strategic shift aims to ensure greater sugar availability for domestic consumption while maintaining the petrol-blending program. The move comes amid concerns over sugar production due to poor rainfall in key states and rising prices, seeking to balance food security with energy independence.
