A UN Special Rapporteur on racism has criticised Canada for allegedly scapegoating international students, particularly from South Asia, for the country's economic challenges. Dr Ashwini KP noted reports of Asian students facing racism and xenophobia, being blamed for pressures on housing and public services. The rapporteur also expressed concern over hostile political rhetoric targeting minority groups and the normalisation of racist hate speech, which she stated has real-life impacts. She also highlighted reports of students facing precarious living conditions and exploitation by employers.
