South Africa and India hold similar views on the critical need to protect medicinal plants and preserve biodiversity, according to South African Deputy Minister Narend Singh. Speaking at a symposium in Durban, he highlighted joint efforts to uphold rights and ensure fair, equitable benefit sharing from genetic resources and traditional knowledge. Singh warned that rising urban demand, unsustainable harvesting, climate change, and illegal trade are severely pressuring these resources, with 154 commonly used species facing extinction.
