UN Shifts Role in Sahel Post-Peacekeeping Mission

The UN's engagement in the Sahel has shifted from peacekeeping to political and humanitarian work following the withdrawal of its Mali mission, MINUSMA. The UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) now focuses on diplomacy and mediation. This change occurs as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger prioritize sovereignty and form new alliances like the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). The UN's influence is now narrower, focusing on diplomacy rather than direct intervention.
