Arctic Foxes Altered Alaskan Islands Ecosystems

Introducing Arctic foxes to over 400 Alaskan islands for fur farming unexpectedly transformed ecosystems. By preying on seabirds, the foxes significantly reduced the transfer of nutrient-rich guano from the ocean to land. Islands without foxes retained more seabirds, richer soil, and abundant grass. Conversely, islands with foxes shifted towards dominance by shrubs and forbs, altering the natural landscape.

आर्कटिक लोमड़ियों ने अलास्का के द्वीपों के पारिस्थितिकी तंत्र को बदला

अलास्का के 400 से ज़्यादा द्वीपों पर फर फार्मिंग के लिए लाए गए आर्कटिक लोमड़ियों ने अनजाने में वहां के इकोसिस्टम को बदल दिया। इन लोमड़ियों ने समुद्री पक्षियों का शिकार करके समुद्र से ज़मीन तक पोषक तत्वों के ट्रांसफर को बहुत कम कर दिया। जिन द्वीपों पर लोमड़ियां नहीं थीं, वहां ज़्यादा समुद्री पक्षी, उपजाऊ मिट्टी और हरी-भरी घास बची रही। वहीं, लोमड़ियों वाले द्वीपों पर झाड़ियां और जड़ी-बूटियां हावी हो गईं, जिससे प्राकृतिक नज़ारा बदल गया।
